As the earth warms to the songs of spring, our local flower season begins. Narcissus, tulips and ranunculus begin to show their beauty after a long winter’s rest. Flowering branches burst into bloom, everything begins to flourish.

Summer brings abundance as the vitality of the garden is illuminated by the sun. Revitalizing scents of fragrant sweet peas, phlox and garden roses fill the air. The fruits of spring labour are ripe for picking.

Cooler air meets the vibrant hues of oranges, reds and yellows. Dahlias, zinnias, lisianthus and textural elements shine. The garden flaunts a bold and brilliant display before the first frost of the season dusts the blooms.

The flower fields rest and we lean on greenhouse production for fresh flowers. Crafting begins as wreaths and holiday festivities fill our dark months until spring arrives again.

Caitlyn Neufeld is a floral designer, an organic master gardener, and a teacher. She is the creative behind Deerleap Florals, which specializes in creating floral designs for life’s most treasured moments. Placing an emphasis on the seasonal and ephemeral nature of flowers, she creates pieces with intention and artistry at the forefront of her design process.
